CASE STUDY:

Microbial interactions to reduce NH4 levels in dairy waste holding pond

Bio S.I. Technology Water Doctor, a liquid microbial compendium, was administered to a 345,000 gallon waste holding pond to determine the effectiveness on reducing levels of NH4 and the length of treatment needed to experience significant reduction.

In May of 2016 Ben Knox began treating a 345,000 gallon waste holding pond on his family dairy. Water doctor was introduced by means of backpack sprayer at an initial rate of 2 gallons, then 2- 2.5 gallons as detailed below. The treatment commenced in May and concluded in September.

Bio S.I. Technology waste holding pond/ lagoon treatment protocol for a three-tier system and flush water in severe need of treatment. This is not specific to any one system. All programs are built based on the specific factors of the facility and environment.

1st pond- 1 gallon/ 75,000 gallon bi-weekly
2nd pond- 1 gallon/ 150,000 gallons bi-weekly
3rd pond- 1 gallon/ 150,000 gallons every other month
Flush Water- 1 gallon/ 150,000 gallons bi-weekly

Based on laboratory results we can show that the total amount of ammonia was reduced by more than 34% and total available to crop nitrogen increased over 86%. Further testing in holding ponds and lagoons over a longer period of time would hold true to the trend shown in this report.
